Review: Hero Tales

Almost two years ago, I had the opportunity to read and review the book Raising Real Men, Surviving and Teaching Boys by Hal and Melanie Young.  You can read my review on it here.  It was an outstanding book and I highly recommend it to anyone who is raising boys.  Last September I had the pleasure to review another book from Great Waters Press called A Cry From Egypt.  You can read my review on it here.  After enjoying these products so much, I was very happy to have an opportunity for an another review from Raising Real Men Hero Tales.

Theodore Roosevelt wrote a book to teach character and virtue through the stories of American History.  Raising Real Men has taken these stories and turned them into audio books and added sound effects (cannon fire, ships creaking, angry mobs, etc...) to make history something they'll never forget.

There are 3 Cds with several stories on them.  Each story is around 10 minutes long and each CD lasts about an hour.

Part 1- 1732-1777
George Washington (Biography)
Daniel Boone (Biography)
George Rogers Clark (Revolutionary War)
The Battle of Trenton (Revolutionary War)
Bennington (Revolutionary War)

Part 2-1780-1814
Kings Mountain (Revolutionary War)
Stony Point (Revolutionary War)
Gouveneur Morris (French Revolution)
The Philadelphia (Barbary Pirates)
The Wasp (War of 1812)
The Privateer General Armstrong

Part 3-1814-1865
The Battle of New Orleans (War of 1812)
John Quincy Adams and the Right of Petition
Francis Parkman
“Remember The Alamo!” (Texas Revolution)
Hampton Roads (USS Monitor and CSS Virginia)
The Flag-Bearer (War Between The States)

Each CD costs $7.00, or you can purchase all three for $15.00.  If you'd rather purchase them as mp3 downloads, the cost is $4.00 each.  To order click here.

Audio Books were not something I even thought of until a few years ago.  My now 9 year old son was having reading difficulties, but he had outstanding comprehension.  I couldn't read aloud enough to satisfy his hunger for books.  Then I read about how dyslexic children greatly benefited from listening to Audio Books and they became a staple in our home(school.)  Audio Books can be a great teaching tool.  Books on CD can be played when you are traveling in the car, stuck inside on a rainy day, listened to at night before bed, or when coloring, drawing, or building blocks or legos.

I don't just want my children listening to just any story though.  I want them to be good, wholesome stories that teach them something and carry a good message.  Hero Tales are audio books that can be enjoyed by all ages.  I, myself found them to be interesting and learned many things that I didn't know, but they do definitely have a strong "masculine" appeal.  The narrator (Hal Young) does a great job bringing the events and people to life, and the added sound effects are a nice addition (that's one thing the boys tell me when I read aloud, that I don't do great sound effects.)  My guys enjoyed listening to Hero Tales while drawing or building their legos and the biography of George Washington is their favorite story.

Disclaimer:  I received a complimentary copy of Hero Tales for the purpose of writing a fair and honest review.  I received no other compensation.
