Schoolhouse Review Crew: Time4Learning

Time4Learning is an online learning website for ages pre-k-12th grade.  It can be used as a core curriculum or supplement and covers subjects such as language arts, math, science (1st-6th), and social studies (2nd-7th.)  They also have art for grades 4-8 that begins after your first month subscription is over, and health and economics/personal finance for the high school levels.  I recently had an opportunity to use and review Time4Learning  with my 4 year old preschool daughter.

Time4Learning uses animated lessons, interactive activities and reinforcing worksheets.  With your subscription, you have access to one grade level above and one grade level below the grade level you set for your student.  You do not have to set the same grade level for each subject.  If your child for instance is great at math, but weak in language arts you could put them at the 5th grade level for math and 3rd grade for language arts.  A subscription gives you unlimited 24/7 access to the website for the duration of your subscription.  There is no special software required, just a computer that has access to the internet.

The Language Arts component for grades pre-k-8th is split into two sections.  The first is Language Arts which teaches and reinforces; phonics, fluency, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing processes, and more.  The second is Language Arts extensions which is designed to be used alongside Language Arts which includes reading comprehension strategies, grammar, writing, literature, spelling rules and more.  Time4Learning Math covers 5 different math strands: number sense and operations, geometry and spatial sense, measurement, data analysis and probability, and algebra.  Science is available for 1-6th grades.  Kindergarten students can have access to 1st grade science and 7th and 8th graders can use the 6th grade science courses.  Topics include: life science, physical science, geology, astronomy, weather, biology, life cycles, sound, light, matter, and energy.  You can see which topics are covered at each grade level here . The Social Studies program includes topics such as: ancient history and civilizations, modern history, geography, civics instructions, and political science.  You can see which topics are covered at which grade level here.

You can view a lesson demo here.

The cost of a subscription is for grades pre-k-8th is $19.95 per month for the first child, and $14.95 per month for additional children.  The high school cost is $30 per student per month for four courses with additional courses costing $5 more per month for each course.

We reviewed the Pre-K level.  Lillian is 4 and I thought Time4Learning would be a great supplement to our curriculum and something fun she could do on her own while I was working with the older children.  We used Time4Learning 3 days per week for 20-30 minutes per day.  I let Lily choose which areas she wanted to work on.  At the Preschool Level you have access to Pre-K 1 and Pre-K 2.  Pre-K 1 has 20 different themes with a total of 83 activities.  Pre-K 2 has 21 different themes with 92 different activities.

Pre-K 1 looks like this

Each category has several activities to choose from.  As the activities are completed, they get a check mark.  When every activity in the category is finished, a check mark is shown on the category.

Pre-K 2 looks like this

Here are a few shots from the Color Mixing Activity.

Parents can see a report of everything their children have completed.

There is also a section called the playground, that the children can go "play" in after completing their lessons.  Parents can set a certain amount of time the student must be in the learning area before they go to the playground, and also how long they can remain in the playground.  Many of the playground activities are on the Time4Learning website, but a few of them are on different websites.

One of the things that I like the most about Time4Learning is that it is so flexible.  You can choose different levels for your child for different subjects, and even then have access to a grade above and below those levels.  Students can work at their own pace.  There is a wide variety of fun, interactive activities.  Parents can easily see what their children have been doing at any time by looking at the reports.  Lillian has enjoyed having a computer game to play that is just for her.  It is one of those things that she doesn't even think it is school work, just a fun game she can play.

Good customer service is very important especially when you are using an online product.  If something goes wrong, you need to have it fixed within a reasonable amount of time.  We had a problem using the playground potion of Time4Learning.  I had it set so Lily had no minimum amount of time before going to the playground and could only spend 15 minutes there.  But, for some reason it wouldn't allow her access at all.  I sent a quick email to customer service and within the hour, my problem was resolved and we had access to the playground.

One of the challenges that we have had using the program is that in several of the activities you have to "drop and drag" things to another location.  Our computer is a laptop with a built in mouse.  Lily cannot hold down the mouse and drag it at the same time.  This is very frustrating to her.  Our solution is that she holds down the mouse and tells me where to drag it and I drag it there.  But, that is challenging for me because I wanted her to be able to use the program all on her own while I was working with the boys.  I wish it allowed you to "pick up" the item by clicking on it and then drag it where it needs to go.  You also may be interested to kow that Time4Learning is a secular program.  I have not seen anything in the Pre-K level that has caused me concern, but I wanted to mention it so parents can be aware and preview sections ahead of time that they may be concerned about.

Homeschool Wrap Up Week 4

This week we added Bible back into our school day.  Even though that is normally morning school work, we are still only working in the afternoons right now so we can spend some time outside everyday.  I wanted to start using something with all of the children together, but that hasn't worked out so far.  We had received Bible Study Guide For All Ages to review earlier on the summer, and although I like it, it is not going to work for us long term.  Even though the Bible story for all the different ages is the same, the lesson format is different, and teaching three different lesson formats at the same time will just not work for me.  Plus, the worksheets are consumable and each child needs their own.  The student pages are $5.95 each and I would need 5 of them, which be be $30 per month, more than I want to spend.  We are going to finish up the ones we already have.  We are all doing the lesson together, Nick and Alex just listen in as I only got enough for 3 students for the review.  We will continue to use the Bible Summary Cards and the Timeline Cards even after we finish.  They are fantastic!  I have not yet decided what we will use next.  Either Classical Academic Press Old Testament 2 or Apologia's What On Earth Can I Do?

We did some science this week as well so I could finish up my review of Christian Kids Explore Creation Science.  We will be coming back to this book some time in the future.  We also just got a new review downloaded and ready to start from YWAM Publishing George Washington :True Patriot book and study guide.  I just got a review just for me!  The Homeschool Mom's Bible.  It came yesterday, and I have to tell you that the devotional I read for yesterday spoke right to my heart.  I am so blessed to have received this and look forward to reading it throughout the year.

We continued on working in our Math and Writing curricula.  I can't believe we already have a whole month of Math completed!

Homeschool Art Class started back up today!  We had fun learning about Picasso.  I will be adding in some information on him into our homeschool this week.

Soccer started up for us too.  I have three children playing on three different teams.  Anthony isn't playing because he doesn't want to, and even though Lily is old enough, we did not give her the option to play this year.  Thankfully all 3 children are practicing on the same days.  That helps a lot!

The county fair starts next week.  This will be our busiest week of the year.  We will not be adding in our full morning school work until after this week is over.

I hope you had a great week in your homeschool!

Homeschool Art Class Week One

We were so excited to be back to Art Class today!  Our last class was all the way back in February.  Our teacher had gotten sick and then had to have a knee and hip replacement.  We were not sure if she would even be able to teach this fall, but I got an email from her a few weeks ago that said she was ready to start classes again.  The children couldn't wait!

I wasn't sure how much of an interest we would have because they have started a writing co-op in our area for homeschoolers and there are several families that are participating in that, but it is only for ages 3rd grade and up.  We also have several new homeschooling families in our area (yay!) So I sent out some information and we had 12 sign up for the morning class, and 5 for the afternoon class!  We shortened the class from 2 hours to 1 1/2 hours to make it easier on some of the moms and because 2 hours was a bit too long for some of the little ones.

Today we only got two projects done because we had to fill out paperwork and get everyone introduced and situated.  We split the children into two tables with 1st grade and up at one table and Pre-K-K at the other table.  Today's lesson was on Picasso.  The children did a drawing using different shapes and lines and then colored each section a different color.

For the second project, the older children traced a leaf and then shaded it in with greens, browns, and yellows.  The younger children cut random shapes and designs out of green paper and then glued those to a leaf picture.

Emelia just drew and colored whatever she wanted to.

At the end of class they had some time to play with the toys.  They were glad they were still there!

We had a great first class and are looking forward to next week!

Favorite Recipes: Bread and Butter Squash Pickles

We had a ton of zucchini squash growing in our garden this year.  So Chelsea decided that she was going to make some into pickles.  I admit that I wasn't too sure about how they would turn out, but they are really good!  Here is the recipe she used:

To make 5-6 pints

4 cups squash chopped
2 cups vinegar
3 cups of sugar
2 tsp celery seed
2 tsp mustard seed
2 tsp turmeric

1.  Sprinkle squash with 3 Tbsp of salt.  Let sit for an hour then drain.
2.Mix other ingredients and bring to a hard boil.
3. Add squash and bring to a boil again.
4.  Fill jars and put in water bath for 10 min.

Review: Christian Kids Explore Creation Science by Bright Ideas Press

In 2012, I had an opportunity to review Christian Kids Explore Biology from Bright Ideas Press.  You can find my review on that here.  I was very excited to see the newest book in the series, Christian Kids Explore Creation Science, and was even more excited that we were sent a copy to use and review.

Christian Kids Explore Creation Science was written for grades 4-8, but it can be easily adapted to use with a little younger or a little older children.   The focus of this book is the study of Creation Science where wonders of God's creation will be appreciated.  It contains 28 lessons in 6 units including:

Unit One: Creation Science and the Creation Model

Unit Two: Six Days of Creation

Unit Three: The Flood of Noah

Unit Four: The Age of the Earth

Unit Five: Evolution and the Evolution Model

Unit Six: Confidence in Creation Science

In addition to the textbook, you also receive a CD that contains: lesson plans, reproducibles, materials list, and a bonus literature study guide.

Each unit starts out with a short introduction, list of objectives, vocabulary words, and materials.  Then it goes into the teaching time which you can read aloud, or have older students read on their own.  After teaching time for each lesson there are 5 Review It fill in the blank questions.  There is also a Hands On Time activity to reinforce what was taught in the lesson in a fun and interesting way.  Each unit also has a coloring page, Think About It exercise and a multiple choice Unit Wrap Up.  Also, there are Scripture verses that are related to the lessons, defined vocabulary words, and interesting relevant trivia information in each lesson.

View a sample by clicking here.

You can purchase Christian Kids Explore Creation Science for $39.95.

I have been using Christian Kids Explore Creation Science with my 11,9,8,6,4, and 2 year olds.  One of the things I like the most about the Christian Kids Explore series is that you can adapt it to use with a wide range of ages.  The younger children may not learn all of the definitions and answers that the older children do, but they certainly can listen in, color the coloring pages, and participate in the hands on activities.  The hands on activities are our favorite part!  Reading about something is great, but when you get to do a hands on activity, is much more fun!  Activities in this book include: making a creation science notebook, discovering seeds, animal scavenger hunt, species name discovery, dog facts, build a dinosaur, light scavenger hunt, sky inventory, how did your garden grow, constellations, get a pet fish, days of creation summary, build a model of Noah's ark, load the cargo onto the ark, a sediment shake, make a fossil, become a zoology expert, vocabulary word search, leaf collection, label a cell picture, build a bird that flies, compare a bird to reptiles, work on a puzzle, create what you think, read The Emperor's New Clothes, make a model of Mars, and make a model of the Earth.

From a busy homeschool mom's standpoint, I think that this course is very easy to teach.  The only advanced prep you need is quick glance at the materials list to see what you will need for the hands on activities so you can buy what you don't have, and printing out the necessary resources from the CD is all you need to do to get ready for the lesson. There is no need for a separate Teacher's book, everything you need is included in the text and the resources CD.

Including the resource CD with the book is wonderful!  It is so easy to pop in the CD and print out all of the pages I need for the lessons.  Much easier and more convenient than trying to scan the pages of the book to copy.

I love the coloring pages!  There is one page for each unit and a few others that go along with the lesson.  I wish there was one for every day's lesson that the girls could color while I was reading.

Most of all, I think the book does a great job explaining what Creation Science is, showing how it falls in line with what God tells us in the Bible, and showing why Evolution cannot be true.  Our children need to know about Evolution so that they can dispute it and I think Christian Kids Explore Creation Science is a great course, and a fun and interesting way for our children to learn this.
