Homeschool Crew Review: Reading Eggs

Online Reading Eggs Suite

It is not very often that I find a subscription to something that I think is worth paying for and that my children enjoy.  My Emmie LOVES Reading Eggs!  I have renewed her subscription once and will again when it runs out.  I was very excited to find out that they were releasing a new line of workbooks  and thrilled when we received 200 Essential Reading Skills for First Grade to use and review.
Online Reading Eggs Suite

There are 3 different reading programs in the Reading Eggs Family.  Reading Eggs Junior is for children ages 2-4 years old. Reading Eggs is for 3-7 years old, and Reading Eggspress is for 7-13 years old.  The company also offers an online Math program called Math Seeds.  Reading Eggs uses five keys to reading success: phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, and fluency to teach reading skills in a game like atmosphere.  As children complete activities, they earn eggs that can "buy" them different items in the game for their house or egg, or earn them playtime in the arcade. Reading Eggs can be played on a computer with an internet browser, or on Apple devices with iOS 9.0 or newer or Android 6.0 or later.

Children start by taking a placement test to see where they should begin the program. When children "play" Reading Eggs they do a variety of different activities to complete each lesson.   The activities for each lesson differs.  They also have opportunities to earn more eggs by reading books on their shelf and taking quizzes about the books.

Reading Eggs is offering 4 weeks free to try it out! https://readingeggs.com/crew24/

The new workbooks coincide with the lessons on Reading Eggs. Our review is of the the 200 Essential Reading Skills For First Grade.  For each numbered lesson there are 4 pages of activities.  After every nine lessons there is a review lesson and following the review lesson there is a quiz for that section.  After completing the quiz there is a certificate that you can fill out for your child and then a Fun Spot page with different fun activities.

The Table of Contents in the front of the book tells what that lesson focuses on.  For example lesson 71 works on the words my, come, and play.  They trace the words come and play and then write them. Next they use the word my in different sentences and cross out the incorrect word.  Then they draw a line from the word to a picture and write different words in the corresponding box.  Then they complete the sentence with the correct word.  The last activity for this lesson is to read a short selection and answer some multiple choice questions.  In the front of the book you will also find a
year planner and instructions on using the books.

The workbook is brightly colored and very appealing to children.  My daughter was so excited to see it come in mail!  She snatched it up and went right to work!  I started her on the same lesson she was on in Reading Eggs.  After completing the lessons on the iPad, she would work on the worksheet pages.  The lessons in the workbook help to reinforce what she has learned.  She just loves Reading Eggs and I am so excited that they have released these high quality workbooks to go along with the online lessons!  She did not want to stop working in the workbook and asks when she can do more pages.
