I always think it's interesting when homeschool stuff overlaps without it being on purpose. This week my older boys and younger children both learned about The Wright Brothers and I had no idea it was in both of the lessons (I rarely look ahead) and we are working our way into WWI in The Mystery of History IV and reading about WWI in the biography we are reading on C.S. Lewis and that was unplanned. Also I am reading Farmer Boy to Lily, Christian, and Anthony, and Alex's first literature assignment was to read Farmer Boy.
Week 17 in our Homeschool
P.E.: We did two days of Family Time Fitness and 2 days of yoga.
Bible: We completed lesson 10 in GrapeVine Old Testament One.
Read Aloud: We read 4 chapters of C.S. Lewis Master Storyteller.
History: In The Mystery of History Vol IV, Nick and Alex completed lessons 43-45 on Wilbur and Orville Wright Take Fight, Helen Keller, and Albert Einstein. We watched a few youtube videos showing the footage of the Wright Brothers first flights and of Helen Keller working with her teacher Anne Sullivan. The boys completed their worksheets, timeline figures, and memory cards. Their map assignment was on Antarctica in preparation for next week's lessons.
Science: In Exploring Creation with Anatomy and Physiology we completed chapter 9 on the nervous system.
My Father's World Adventures: We continued in our reading of Farmer Boy. I noticed that the version we are reading had a different cover then the one I was used to. What I didn't notice until this week was that it also had no illustrations! It is just not the same book without the pictures so I pulled our old well read and worn out copy off the shelf to read. We continued on in our study of birds. We covered New Hampshire, Virginia, New York (my home state!), and North Carolina (Nick was born there) in our state study. We also watched the footage of the Wright Brothers when talking about North Carolina.
This state book has been a great addition to our state studies.
Math: Everyone completed lesson 16 in their Math U See books. Sometimes children's logic just doesn't match ours, even when it is something straight forward like math. Anthony had a word problem that was asking about how many cars you would need for 17 people if 5 could fit in each car. His answer was 3 remainder 2. I asked him how the other two people were going to get where they needed to go and he said it was fine they could walk because they only had to travel 500 feet!
Grammar/Writing/Literature: We finished lesson 21 of Fix it! 1 and 2. Christian and Anthony did a key word outline and a paragraph on pigs using a who/which, an "ly"adverb, and a quality adjective. Nick finished his quizzes on War of the Worlds. Alex started the first book study on Farmer Boy in Learning Language Arts Through Literature, the Purple Book.
Reading/Spelling: Alex finished lesson 15 in Phonetic Zoo. In AAR Level 3 Anthony and Christian finished lessons 18 and 19. In AAR Level One Lily finished lessons 36,37,38,and 39. In AAS Level 2 we will be repeating step 10 because I did not introduce the words at the beginning of the week (shame on me!) and thought they could just take the test and move on. I was wrong.
Horizon's Preschool: Emmie completed lessons 97 and 98.
Other Activities This Week:
Monday: The girls had gymnastics. We had to go to Dollar Tree after because the girls wanted to spend their money to buy Nick a birthday present.
Tuesday: Nick's birthday!! Emmie made his cake and we had pizza for supper. The girls wrapped his presents for him. They were so proud to give him the things they had bought!
Wednesday: Kid's Club. This is an after school program at my church. We have drivers that take vans to the schools to pickup kids that sign up. When they get to church they get a snack, have outside recreation time, music, a Bible story, and make a craft. They also have Bible verses to memorize.
I hope you had a great week in your homeschool!
