July Nature Seekers 4 H Meeting

This month's meeting on pet/animal care.  I found a recipe for some homemade dog treats that we could make and while those were baking, each of the children gave a brief talk about how they care for their pets/livestock.  We heard talks on cats, dogs, a horse, a cow, goats, and chickens.  I was so proud of each of them for giving their little talk and I hope it will help them to be more confident about doing more talks and competing in the Illustrated Talks competition in the spring.

The recipe we used for the dog treats was:

2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
1 egg
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 beef bouillon cube dissolved in 1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon brown sugar

Preheat oven to 350.  Combine all ingredients until well mixed.  Knead dough.  Roll out on a lightly floured surface to 1/4 in thick.  Cut out with cookie cutters.  Bake 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. We used small cookie cutters and ended up with 72 dog treats.

Our dog was not sure when we first gave it to her but as soon as she tried it, ate it right up.

Next months meeting will be to get our fair booth ready and make something for the fair.
