TOS Review: AIMS

AIMS Educational Foundation is a non-profit foundation dedicated to help teachers give their students a solid conceptual understanding of science and math.  They promise to: make learning engaging, make activities affordable and materials readily available, and make their activities easy to use without compromising their conceptual development or effectiveness.   Members of the TOS Crew had an opportunity to review one of the following: It's About Time, What On Earth, Fabulous Fractions, Earth Rocks, Looking at Lines, and From Head to Toe.  We had the opportunity to use and review Fabulous Fractions.

See a sample here.

Understanding fractions can be one of the most difficult math concepts elementary children face.  Fabulous Fractions was designed to teach children in grades 3-5 concepts involving fractions using hands on experiences.  Fabulous Fractions contains 22 activities using manipulatives , real life experience, and even card games to take the abstract idea of fractions off of the page and turn it into a hands on concept that children can understand.

The cost of Fabulous Fractions is $21.95 for the physical book and $19.95 for the PDF download.  You can purchase by clicking here.

The best way for children to learn is by doing.  Fractions are a difficult concept to understand especially without concrete, real life ways to show the relationships of equivalent fractions or comparing fractions to decimals.  Fabulous Fractions is full of hands on activities like using: fraction cd's, circle manipulatives showing parts and wholes, making a frame from popsicle sticks to show equivalent fractions, making a paper fraction fringe, making a slide ruler, playing games, and many more.

Fabulous Fractions was written with a classroom not a homeschool in mind.  Many of the activities are difficult to do with only one student, as they are designed to use in groups of students.  The instructions are well written for each activity, but it is not something you can just open and do.  Advance preparation is needed to be able to understand and do all of the activities.

Disclaimer:  As a member of the TOS Crew, I received a complimentary copy of Fabulous Fractions for the purpose of writing a fair and honest review.  I received no other compensation.
