Our kit included:
box to hold the supplies
2 large pieces of white paper
6 temporary star masks
1 textured roller
1 foam roller
stencil
3 bottles of paint: white, blue, black
box of 4 oil pastels: yellow white, orange, blue
instruction booklet with step by step instructions and information on Vincent van Gogh
You need to provide:
newspaper or something to cover your work surface if you are worried about mess
tape to tape the paper down
paper plate or paint pallet to squeeze your paint onto
There is enough paper provided to do two projects and if you purchase additional large sheets of paper, there is plenty of paint and oil pastels to do multiple projects and the rollers, stickers, and stencil can be used over and over again. My girls (9 and 7) both wanted to work on the kit together. The only disadvantage to doing it that way was that they only could use three "stars" each, but they were fine with that. They could have easily followed the instructions on their own as they are illustrated, but I sat with them to make sure they didn't have any problems. The age recommendation for this kit is 3-105 so a wide range of ages can definitely enjoy this project!
The first thing we did was tape the paper down to the table. We use our school room table for a lot of art projects so I did not worry about covering it with anything. The paper does need to be taped securely as the paper is rolled in the box and you need it to lay flat.
Next they decided where to place the temporary stars and squeezed 4 quarter sized amounts of blue paint onto a paper plate.
Then we rolled the textured roller over the paint and rolled it all across the white paper. It puts swirly strokes onto the paper just like van Gogh's painting!
After that step is completed you add white paint over the blue on your palette and paint over it with the textured roller.
Then you remove the "star" stickers (which are really just circles.) You need to be very careful at this step. Emmie was in a hurry and pulled too fast on one of hers and it tore the paper. I used a glue stick and stuck it back down and it was just fine.
Next you line up the stencil over top of the paper and tape it down. Black paint gets squeezed onto the palette and you use the smooth roller to paint over the open areas of the stencil. Once this is completed you carefully remove the stencil and allow the painting to dry for 5-10 minutes.
Once your painting is dry you use the oil pastels to shade in the stars, buildings, and trees. Children can mix and blend and add their own special touches to the painting.
Then you are finished!
My girls absolutely loved creating their The Starry Night master pieces! This kit was so fun to use. The rollers, stickers, and stencil made it so easy to create the classic piece and at the same time, they could make it their own. The instructions were very easy to follow. There is also some brief information about van Gogh included in the instruction booklet. We loved the box that everything came with and that the supplies can be used multiple times.
