Homeschool Crew Review: WriteBonnieRose

Write Bonnie Rose
Over the last several weeks we have had an opportunity to use and review Learning About Science Collection, Level 1 from WriteBonnieRose.

Learning about Science Collection Level 1

Learning About Science Collection , Level 1is a set of 7 studies for children in grades 1-3.  These are available as PDF downloads.  Each study has text for an adult to read to the student or more advanced readers can read on their own, pictures for them to color, and words relating to the topic for them to trace. There are also review activity sheets with answer keys included.  The length of each study varies.  Books in this collection includes:

Exploring States of Matter (12 pages)- Teaches solids, liquids, and gas and how some matter can change.

Earth Layers Earthquakes and Volcanoes (12 pages)- Students learn about the different layers of the earth, and what causes earthquakes and volcanoes to erupt.

Learning About Life Cycles (27 pages)- Students learn about the life changes of many different types  of animals.

Our Senses and How They Work (19 pages)- Reviews the 5 senses and some of the major body systems.

Animal Habitats of the World (51 pages)- Teaches about 18 different habitats and what 78 different animals need to survive.

Fruits and Vegetables Around the World (37 pages) Learn where 28 fruits and vegetables are grown and what they are used for.

Familiar Plants and How They Grow (14 pages)-Learn about the different parts of a plant and what makes a plant a plant.

I have been using Learning About Science Collection Level 1 with my 7 year old daughter who is getting ready to enter 2nd grade.  We go through the topic together.  I read each page and she traces the words on the page.  After we finish the section she completes the review in the back and then goes back and colors the pictures on her own.  We have gone through though the study on Familiar Plants and How they grow and learned about all of the different parts of a plant and how they reproduce.  Even though we have a garden and have planted many seeds I have never gone over the different parts of the flower so this was new and fun information for her to learn.  We have also gone through the study of Life Cycles learning about the names for baby arctic foxes and seals, rabbits, reindeer, walruses, barn owls, chickens, penguins, puffins, alligators, crocodiles, frogs, butterflies, ants, and more. We have also worked on the Exploring States of Matter study and learned about what makes a solid a solid, a liquid a liquid, and a gas a gas.  We also learned that some matter can change its state and how this happens. I thought these topics were explained very well and made it easy for them to understand something that is a bit difficult.  This was not something I had taught her before and she understands it very well after going through this brief study.

I think the text does a good job explaining the topics in a way that is easy for young children to understand while still using the proper terms for the topic being discussed.  It is not too wordy or too short and gives a great introduction to each topic.  You can use this collection to give your student an overview of different scientific topics, or you could use this collection as a jumping off point and find some other resources to further your study on each topic.  The cost of these collections are very affordable and easy to print as they are all in black and white.  I like the review at the end of each study.

I think that a good age range for this would be K-2.  Even with Emmie going into 2nd grade she would be able to write these words on her own rather then tracing them. Also, the illustrations are very cartoon-like and not at all realistic.  In a study about animals and their habitats I would love to see drawings that were more like you would see in real life.
