March Grandview Program and Art Co-op

Yesterday was our March Grandview Science Program and Art Co-op.  Can you believe I forgot to bring my camera?  Luckily I have a camera on my phone, though it is not a wonderful one I was still able to take some pictures.  We had 34 children plus parents attend the program.

Our science program was on birds of prey.  The Delta Rivers Nature Center came and presented our program and brought two live birds for the children to see: a red tailed hawk and a barred owl.  It was so cool!  He talked at length about those two birds and other birds of prey.  He also had some tail feathers and skeletons to show them and we got to listen to some different bird calls.

The children were also given an owl pellet to take home and dissect.

Then we had our lunch break.

After lunch we had our art program.  19 children came to the art program.  Each month we cover a new artist and make a project based n their work.  This month I was excited because I just received a new ARTistic Pursuits book to review and I was hoping it would arrive in time for the co-op and it did!  I had planned on doing Henri Matisse this month and there was a lesson on him in the book.  So I did the slide show of the artist and some of his works as usual and then did the lesson and project out of the book.  The project was to make a cut paper collage.  The children had some great ideas and came up with some amazing projects.

My children's projects.

Just as a little amusing part of the day, Emelia was worried about Ms. Aneessah's snake cause he was too flat.

It is just the skin that the snake shed.  Nick explained it all to her :)

February Grandview Program and Art Co-op

The day before our January Grandview program and art co-op was scheduled, Alex was sick.  I didn't want to be away from him for that long so I rescheduled the programs.  The day I rescheduled them for did not work for several of the families that attend and we just ended up not having the programs in January and waiting instead to our regular day (the second Wednesday of each month) for February.

Aneesah usually does our programs but she was away on a mission trip so Caleb stepped in to do our program.  The program topic was on White Tail Deer.  He gave a talk to the children about white tail deer such as some of their features, what they like to eat, and what types of habitats they are found in.

They got to hold some antlers and a hoof.

We headed outside for a nature walk to look for signs of deer. They were excited to see some rubbings on the trees and a hoof print.

Our craft was to draw and decorate a doe, buck, and/or a fawn.  There were lots of supplies available that each child could be very creative in making their pictures.

For our art co-op we learned about Michelangelo.  I made a slide show for the children with some of his most famous works.  Because of the "content" of some of his works and the ages of our children, I used a head shot for the statue of David, a large area shot of the Sistine Chapel and then some smaller shots of the face of God and just the hands of God and Adam almost touching.  We filled out a notebook sheet with some information on Michelangelo and his works.

Our project was to paint a fresco plaque using water colors.  But, I had never used the plaster we had available and it had warnings on it not to let children touch it!  So instead of using plaster we used air dry clay.  The children added some water to it and made it a litter wetter and painted water colors on it.  A few of them wanted to make actual sculptures with the clay so those that wanted to did :)

Happy Homeschooling!

Homeschool Art Class Week 11

Today was our last class before Thanksgiving.  First we did a review on what we learned so far.  I was quite impressed that my children remembered the names of the artists we studied each month and were able to answer the questions they were asked.

Their first project was a drawing that showed a Matisse, an O'Keeffe, and a Picasso.  Then they colored them in.

Our second project was making turkeys using toilet paper rolls, paper, feathers, and googley eyes.

Our last project was to do a drawing following the teacher's instructions.

Emmie drew one picture but the rest of the time kept herself busy with a snack, her little buddy, and some toys.

Another great art class!

Homeschool Art Class Week 10

Just when you think all the children are well.....one starts feeling bad again.  Yesterday Lily started running a low grade fever again and complaining of a sore throat.  Then last night Christian started complaining that his throat hurt when he swallowed.  So this morning we went to art class minus a few of the children.

We are leaning about Georgia O' Keeffe this month.  Our first assignment was to draw a really big flower and color it in using three different colors.

For our second project we made flowers out of tissue paper and pipe cleaners.

Emmie and her little buddy kept busy.

She did draw and color some.

Our last project was to draw a mountain, a tree, and some clouds.  They were supposed to color with marker, crayon, and colored pencils in layers.  We did not finish those pictures because we ran out of time, but they are supposed to finish them and take them back next week.

Lily was so sad she didn't get to go to art class that I brought home the supplies for her to be able to make a flower.  She made it after she ate lunch, she was quite happy she got to make one too!  She fell asleep on the couch holding onto her flower.

Another great art class!

Homeschool Art Class Week 9

It is a new month, so we are learning about a new artist in art class.  This month's artist is Georgia O' Keeffe. Georgia O' Keeffe was born in America in 1887 and died in 1986.  She always dreamed of being an artist.  She liked to paint all kinds of flowers, and paint them really big.  She also painted landscapes.

We were a small class today because one family was sick and others were out of town.  Our first project in art class was to draw a flower that took up almost the whole sheet of paper.  After drawing the flower, the children outlined them in black marker and then colored them with 3 different primary colors.

After they finished that project, they did a watercolor painting of the flowers they just drew.

The third project was a drawing.  The children got to pick their favorite artist that we have studied so far: Picasso, Matisse, and O' Keeffe and draw a picture based on one of those artists.  I did not take any pictures of those drawings as I was helping to clean up.  I was really impressed though with the drawings the children came up with.

Another great art class!
