Homeschool Crew Review: In the Reign of Terror

Heirloom Audio Productions

Heirloom Audio Productions has a passion for bringing history to life.  They do this by sending a team to travel around the world and visit the places that Christian heroes walked and turn what they have learned and experienced into audio dramas based on the stories of G.A. Henty.  We have had an opportunity to review many audio dramas from Heirloom Audio Productions and were excited to have a chance to review their latest release, In the Reign of Terror.

In the Reign of Terror

In the Reign of Terror is an active listening drama based on the book In the Reign of Terror: The Adventures of a Westminster Boy by G.A. Henty, that was published in 1888.  The story takes place during the French Revolution.  Harry is a 16 year old English boy who is sent to France to live with a noble family for a couple of years.  The Marquis thinks Harry will be a good influence on his sons and Harry is excited for the opportunity to be in France.  But the French Revolution has started and arrest orders are made for all the noble families.  The marquis and marquise and the marquis sons are arrested.  Harry stays in France so he can help the daughters of the marquis and find a way for them to escape the country.

The audio drama uses fast paced storytelling, music, and sound effects to keep the listener engaged in the story.  In the Reign of Terror has a star cast including: Brian Blessed (Star Wars, Tarzan, Robin Hood), John Rys-Davies (Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings), Jack Farthing (Poldark), Cathy Sara (Downtown Abbey), Christina Greatrex (The Royal Shakespeare Company), Jill Freud (C.S. Lewis at War.  It comes with 2 CD's with over an two hours of playing time.  In the Reign of Terror is recommended for ages 6 and up.  The 2 CD set can be purchased for $29.97 or you can buy the mp3 version for $19.97.

New to Heirloom Audio Productions is the Live the Adventure Club.  This is a membership option that bills every three months and you receive a brand new audio adventure 3 times a year.  Along with the physical CDs that you receive you have access to several bonuses for each CD on the website including: a study guide, an option to listen to the story online, a downloadable ebook, online listening to the soundtrack, printable cast poster, inspirational verse poster, desktop wallpaper download, and a downloadable copy of the official script.

We received access to the Live the Adventure Club and had an opportunity to review the study guide. The Study Guide is a 43 page pdf download.  Each section of the guide spans a 4-8 minute listening section that stops when the story takes a new turn.  Each section contains the following:

Listening Well- Questions about what your child has learned

Thinking Further- Requires more in depth though to answer. Children may have to do some research, speculate about the characters intentions, or draw conclusions.

Defining Words- A list of words for your child to define.

It also has information on G.A. Henty, Maximilien Robespierre, and Marie Antoinette.  Throughout the guide are Expand Your Learning sections that give information that pertains to the time period.  There is even a section that has a recipe so you can make no knead French bread, and brioche. You will also find a list of resources you can read for more information, 3 different Bible studies, and some background information on the French Revolution.

Heirloom Audio Productions does an amazing job bringing history to life through their audio dramas.  These are great wholesome stories that can be enjoyed by the entire family.  If you have younger children, you may want to listen ahead of time.  There is nothing graphic or gory in In the Reign of Terror, but since it takes place during the French Revolution, terrible things are going on and many people die.  There are parts of the story that are very intense.  The story will keep you on the edge of your seat.  The music and sound effects are fantastic and the actors and actresses do an amazing job.  I just love the narrators voice.

In the Reign of Terror is wonderful for families who enjoy audiobooks or those who may be studying the French Revolution.
