Homeschool Wrap Up Week 5

Even though we are finishing week 5 in our homeschool, we are only halfway through week 5 in our Exploring Countries and Cultures curriculum.  We missed two days a few weeks ago for the fair and instead of trying to rush through everything to get "caught up" we just have continued completing one day's worth of work each day.  It is kind of strange because my worksheets will say the wrong day on them and we started a new book in the middle of our week, but there are some days coming up that do not have a lot of activities and I will combine those.   I am glad I am in charge of my own schedule.

Week 5 in our Homeschool

P.E.: We competed 4 days of Family Time Fitness.

Bible: We finished up reading about Harriet Tubman in Hero Tales.  We read from Matthew 2:1-23. Our new memory verse is Matthew 4:4.

Read Aloud: For our morning read aloud, we finished two chapters in Kingdom Tales.  That book is set aside for awhile.  The new assigned read aloud is Cameron Townsend: Good New In Every Language.

Our afternoon read aloud this week was Stone Fox.  I had never read this before.  Alex read it on his own last year but none of the other children had read it either.  It was a short read aloud.  I am not going to spoil it for you if you have not read it, but it does have a tragic ending.  We were all shocked.
Poetry: We started memorizing our 11th poem from IEW.  It is Jonathan Bing.  We will be working on this all next week also.

E.C.C.: We finished up the U.S. by reviewing all of the states and started working on Mexico.  We read a few pages on Mexico, completed our John 3:16 worksheet, talked about money is Mexico and how many pesos you can get for $10.  We added Mexico to our world map.  For the science portion we read about the forest floor and then switched to learning about deserts.  We colored deserts on a world map and completed a worksheet about the characteristics of deserts.

The Book of Animals was recommended for 2 and 3rd graders.  Lillian started working on North American Animals.

Science: In Exploring Creation with Astronomy we completed the chapter about Earth.

Art: No art this week.

Language Arts: Alex is working on punctuation in All In One English.  Lillian learned about proper nouns and started a new word list of "ar" words in Jolly Grammar.  Anthony and Christian learned about Thank You notes.  I had them write a fictitious thank you note to whoever they wanted.  Christian wrote to the Invisible Guy and at the end of his note said, "P.S. I haven't seen you around in awhile." Funny boy.  Anthony wrote to a LEGO character.  We did rough drafts one day, final draft another day, and addressed the envelopes another day.

We also did lesson 3 Fix It! Grammar in books 2 and 3.  I am just not sure about continuing in Book 3 with Nick.  I really liked books 1 and 2, but Book 3 is just not making a lot of sense to him and I am not sure how important it is for him to be doing the type of labeling they are doing in that book.  I want him to understand grammar for the purpose of writing well and I am not sure we are achieving that goal.  I am going to have to think on it a bit.

Spelling/Reading:  In AAR Level 4 Anthony and Christian completed lessons 11,12, and 13.  In AAS Level 3 they completed Step 6.  In AAR Level 2 Lily completed lessons 35,36, and 37.

Math: Nick completed lesson 4 in MUS Geometry.  Alex completed 4 lessons in Teaching Textbooks 7.  Christian, Anthony, and Lily completed 4 lessons in Math Lessons for a Living Education.

MFW Creation A to Z: Emmie finished up the unit on Nest.  She did a sequencing page, math page, cut and paste page, and drawing page.  We read Annie and Snowball and the Nest.  She also did a painting of a nest in a tree.

All American History:  Nick completed lessons 15-18.

Discovering God's Design in Nature: He finished assignment for days 19-22.

Other Activities this Week:

It was a very busy week and that will continue for at least the next 5 or 6 weeks.  Art was out of town for three days this week too.

Monday we had a 4 H meeting.

After that Alex had a soccer practice.

Tuesday Nick had youth at church, Alex had a soccer practice from 6-7 and Christian had practice from 6:30-7:45.  We went to the playground to kill a little time.

Wednesday we had Kid's Club.

Thursday Christian and Alex had soccer practice at 6.

Friday we had Book Club.  Our book that we read was The Bears on Hemlock Mountain.  After discussing the book, the children created a scene from the book using paper that they cut and glued.

That evening we went out to eat.  They thought it was so cool to sit on a tailgate,

And headed to the District Fair for the first time.  Christian won first place on his photo, Anthony won 3rd on his, Nick won 2nd on his puzzle, Alex won 3rd on his bracelet, Lily won 1st on her doll and Emmie won 2nd on her doll.

They also rode some rides.

And played some games.

The children said it was the best day ever!

Saturday morning I took Nick and Alex for our first robotics meeting.  We have a 4 H team of 10 children ages 12-16 that will be competing in the BEST Robotics competition in November.  They had to decide on a name, make their goals, come up with some booth ideas, and start designing and building their robot.  It is a farm theme this year and it looks like a lot of fun.  I am helping coach (if you can call it that I am really just a back up adult.)

I hope you had a great week!

Happy Homeschooling!
