Review: Survey of Astronomy Curriculum Pack

MasterBooks.com  carries curriculum that is complete, student led, and creation based.  They offer individual subject sets or even complete curriculum for grades Pre-K, K, and 4-12th grades with plans to add in the other grades soon.  I have been very impressed with all of the curriculum I have had the opportunity to review and I was thrilled to have an opportunity to review the Survey of Astronomy Curriculum Pack which can be purchased alone or as part of the 10th Grade Curriculum Set.

Survey of Astronomy Curriculum Pack ($84.32) is suggested for grades 10-12.  After completing the course students earn one credit.  This course takes students on a journey through the universe while they learn the facts and marvels of creation gaining important knowledge about the stars, moon, planets, earth, and more.  This curriculum pack includes:

The Stargazers Guide to the Night Sky- This beautiful, hardcover 240 page book was written by Dr. Jason Lisle.  It is full of wonderful illustrations and fascinating information.  There are 12 chapters in this book: 1. Motions in the Sky-Basic, 2. Motions in the Sky-Advanced, 3. Understanding the Eye, 4. Astronomy with the Untrained Eye, 5. Celestial Events, 6. Telescope Basics, 7. Telescope Observing Sessions. 8. The Moon and the Sun, 9. The Planets, 10. Star Classification and Telescope Viewing. 11. Deep Sky Objects, and 12. Astrophotography.  It also has a chart to help you locate the positions of the stars on any night of the year.

Our Created Moon- This hardcover, illustrated book is 95 pages long.  It has 5 chapters: Chapter 1: Our Nearest Neighbor, Chapter 2: History of the Moon, Chapter 3. Purposes of the Moon, 4. The Moon in Scripture, and Chapter 5: Answering the Critics.  It also has a section on educational objectives, how to use this book, glossary, references, observing the moon, and living on the moon.

Taking Back Astronomy- This illustrated, hardcover book is 125 pages long.  It has 5 chapters: Chapter 1: The Splendor of God's Creation, Chapter 2: The Universe Confirms the Bible, Chapter 3,: The Age of the Universe, Chapter 4: The Bible and Modern Astronomy, and Chapter 5: War of the World Views.

Our Created Moon DVD- This DVD is 39 minutes long.  In it Dr. Don DeYoung looks at 4 of the ideas evolutionists offer regarding the moon's origin and logically concludes that the only explanation for the moon's existence is that it was placed there by an all powerful, all knowing creator.

Created Cosmos DVD- This DVD presentation is only 23 minutes long.  Take a tour through the universe and learn about it's beauty and vastness.  The beautiful effects, graphics , and commentary helps to illustrate how large the universe really is!

Parent Lesson Planner- The PLP is a 250 page paperbook book.  In it you will find a suggested schedule for 30-45 minutes a day, 5 days a week for 36 weeks.  It also has worksheets for each chapter, quizzes, tests, and answer keys.  The copyright allows making copies for students within the same family.

I have always loved MasterBooks.com's creation based products, but these curriculum packs are wonderful!  All of the work is done for the parent.  Everything is scheduled, but the schedule is flexible and can be adapted to suit your needs.  The curriculum is completely student led.  I love the materials that were chosen for the Survey of Astronomy.  Instead of telling students what to believe, it gives them the necessary information to draw their own conclusions based on the evidence presented helping students to be able to defend the creationist stand point.  The books are beautiful and full of interesting information.  I enjoyed watching the documentaries.  Completing the worksheets will help to ensure your students understanding of the materials.  I like the inclusion of the bonus activities.  Your student can pick and choose from what they find interesting.

The other thing I love about this course is that it is not one that you see offered from many homeschool companies.  Many students are very interested in the stars and planets and I am so thankful that MasterBooks.com has developed and offered this course to high schoolers enabling those who are interested in astronomy to dig deeper and learn more about it.  Survey of Astronomy has been my favorite curriculum pack from MasterBooks.com so far!
