Worm Condo Workshop

Friday was the first of our 4 H summer workshops.  We met at the local Farmer's Market and learned about worms and their role in agriculture.  Then we made worm condos.  This would be a great project for those learning about agriculture, or any kind of earth science.  It also could be a great recycling and reuse project.  It was quick, easy, and inexpensive.

To make the worm condos we used:

empty, rinsed out 2 liter bottle with the label peeled off and the top 1/4 cut off
bag of garden soil
bag of peat moss
grass clippings
water
worms

We used the top part that we cut off to scoop out the soil and place in the bottle.  Then we added a layer of the peat moss.  Next they spritzed the dirt with some water and filled it with grass clippings.  After that the children added a handful of red wiggly worms.

They were very impressed at how quickly the worms were tunneling in the dirt.  Now we will see how well they do in their new homes.
