Review: A Christmas Gift for Rose by Tricia Goyer

Book Description

Inspired by a true story, A Christmas Gift for Rose is a heartwarming novella of sacrifice and deep love.
Born in the midst of the hardships of the Great Depression, Rose grew up in Berlin, Ohio, in the arms of a loving Amish family. But as she prepares to marry, she's thrown into confusion when she learns the truth of her birth. She was born Englisch and abandoned when the family moved on in search of work.
Was she meant to be Amish or would she have been better off growing up with her own kind-Englischers? And was her intended's gift of discovering her birth family given out of love or fear?

I was interested in reading a Christmas Gift For Rose because I enjoy reading Amish Fiction and it is getting to be the Christmas season.  I have to admit though, when I first started reading the book, it sounded an awful lot like another Amish fiction book I had read.  In both of these books, a girl finds out she is not really Amish and a piece of clothing is what led to the discovery.  But, that is where the similarities ended.  I really enjoyed reading a Christmas Gift for Rose.  It really has more than one "story" going on even though they are related themes.  Rose is trying to find out where she belongs.  Is she Amish or an Englischer?  She is hurting from the pain in her past and fearful of her future.  Then there is another story of her love Johnathan who served in the war as a medic, even though the Amish are against such things and his people would've rather seen him go to jail then volunteer his services.  Also returned from war is shop worker Curtis Williams and Rose's neighbor, Harold Ault.  Harold especiaaly carries pain from his past and is fearful of his future, but the other two men are also trying to figure out their place in this world after war.
A Christmas Gift for Rose is a good uplifting story with a good message of trusting God for your past and your future.  I was very pleased with how the book ended.  I thought everything came together nicely at the end and their was a good resolution without making it seem as though everyone's life was perfect.
