Our new baby chicks arrived! This is our 5th year raising baby chicks and it is always an exciting time around our house, especially while the chicks are still small enough to pick up and hold easily. We got 26 Brown Bovan chicks, 25 hens and 1 rooster. Each child needs 3 chickens to show in the fair and 5 of the children are old enough to show chickens. Nick always wants a rooster (although we ended up not getting one last year even though we were supposed to.) We would like to try and hatch some of our own chicks at some point. In case you were wondering, the rooster's name is Timmy (after Tim Tebow of course) other chicken names rolling around were Darth Chicken, Obi Wan Chicken, Ahsokatano Chicken.....you get the idea.

They are soooo cute! (and so are the chicks!) *grin*
ReplyDeleteWe ALMOST got chicks this year! Do you raise them? We go through eggs like crazy at our house so we thought it might be a good investment!
ReplyDeleteWe raise them for 4 H. Every year we have to get new chicks and raise them to show them in the fair. When our new chicks are old enough (16-24 weeks) to start laying we sell the ones from last year. We eat the eggs and also sell some so the eggs pay for the cost of the feed. The hens usually lay an egg per day when they are mature. Chickens are pretty easy to raise.
