Wanda O'Reilly, publisher of Birdcage Press, began creating games to make learning fun for her children.  They began publishing their games in 2000.  Their games have won numerous awards and this year they"are proud to offer a range of games and other products that bring history, art and nature alive for the whole family."  As a member of the Schoolhouse Review Crew, I was thrilled to have an opportunity to use and review Wild Cards: Baby Animals Around the World.

Wild Cards: Baby Animals Around the world is recommended for ages 6 and up.  The set comes with 36 beautiful playing cards with animal facts on each card plus a 28 page companion fact book.  Directions for playing 3 card games: Silly Sloth (played like Old Maid), Animal Memory, and Go Fish For Baby Animals are included in the companion fact book.  The cards are divided into  6 different regions with 3 animals in each region (2 cards of each animal)

Africa- Cheetah, African Elephant, Giraffe

Asia-Giant Panda, Orangutan, Tiger

Australia-Emu, Kangaroo, Koala

North America-Grizzly Bear, White-tailed Deer, Wolf

South America- Capybara, Sloth, Squirrel Monkey

Polar Regions-Emperor Penguin, Harbor Seal, Polar Bear

You can purchase Wild Cards: Baby Animals Around the World for $10.95 here.  Birdcage Press has several other Animal, Art, and History games available.  Click here to see all of their available games.

I have been using Wild Cards: Baby Animals Around the World with my 4,6,7, and 9 year olds. It is so much more than a card game!  They are a fun and educational learning tool.  The images are spectacular!  The facts included on each card are fun and interesting.  Even though there are two cards for each animal, each card contains different interesting facts about the animal.  For example, on the orangutan cards one card has facts about the arms and legs of the orangutan and the other has facts about gestation time of baby orangutans.  Each of the geographical regions are color coded and numbered which makes finding the other animals in the region very easy.  At the bottom of each card it lists the other two animals in that region.

The cards are a little larger than "regular" playing cards.  So the pictures and the lettering are good sizes and easy on the eyes.  The cards are very sturdy, although I am sure they could bend and tare if one tried hard enough!  We kept these cards out of Emelia's hands as she is only two and I didn't want her to lose or do any damage to the cards.

We started off with one geographical region at a time.  First we located that region on the map.  Then we read the companion guide for the cards in that area. Next we played memory match with that set of cards, going over the fun facts about the animal as we matched them.  The children even acted out some of the animals as we learned the facts, like moving very slow like a sloth.  The memory game was pretty easy the first day with only 6 cards to work with, but each time we took the cards out, we covered a new geographical region and added more cards to the game.  Unless I am playing with Lily(4).  Then I only use 18 cards at a time, although I am not sure why.  She wins every time!

What a fun way to learn geography and baby animals!  My children loved the pictures on the cards and playing the memory match game (there are other games you can play as well but that was their favorite.)  I loved the sturdy box the cards came with as well.  It helps keep the cards safe from baby sister and makes them very easy to store and transport.  I also liked that the cards can be used by the children together, or a parent can play with a child, or your child can even play by themselves.

I would highly recommend Wild Cards: Baby Animals Around the World!

What We Are Up To

The next two weeks are going to be very busy for us.  This week is VBS at our church Mon-Fri from 9-12. I am taking care of the Pre-K (of course.)  VBS means up and out of bed early every morning and hopefully some quiet afternoons.  We enjoy VBS every year and I am so glad I am able to volunteer, but it also makes me thankful that I do not have to drag all the children out of bed and rush them out the door every morning!

Wednesday, we are not going to be able to go to VBS.  Chelsea is attending a 4 H camp in Little Rock and we have to drive her up there.  I am planning on leaving early in the morning because it is a LONG drive, and so we can go to the Discovery Museum for a couple of hours while we are there.  Our passes to Mid America allow us to get into The Discovery Museum for free.  We have never been there before but I know the children will enjoy it!  We can grab some food throug a drive though, drop Chelsea off, and then hopefully the girls will nap on the way home.

After VBS on Friday, we are going on a short tent camping trip.

The next Tuesday is district 4 H competition for Nick, Alex, and Chelsea.

The next day Chelsea leaves for Quad County Camp for 3 days.

Whew!  I get tired just thinking about it!

We have several great review products we are working on for the Schoolhouse Review Crew during "school time" at home.  We have been spending time outside in the mornings and doing our work right after lunch.  Some of the things we are working on include:

Birdcage Press
Memoria Press- Prima Latina
Moving Beyond the Page: Ben and Me & Electricity and Magnetism
IEW: TWSS and SWI C
Dig It!: Mayan Mysteries
Science For High School: Physical Science
Susan K. Marlow Books: Tunnel of Gold
Homeschool Programming: Kid Coder Visual Basic Series

Plus I am reviewing a soft cover Homeschool Yearbook from Picaboo Yearbooks.  I have been working on it this week and it has been a LOT of fun!  I also have a review for Christi the Coupon Coach that will be posting in July.

Our garden is growing!  I have big sunflowers, tomatoes, and pinto beans growing.  Plus a few stalks of corn, lettuce, the squash is flowering, and a few watermelon plants have come up.  Not bad for a first garden!

The chickens are growing.  A raccoon dragged two of the chicks we hatched through the wire under the pen and ate them.  We know it was a raccoon because he left his tracks behind.  We have a leg trap set up and hopefully will catch him before he gets another free chicken dinner!

I guess I better get away from this computer and get some things ready for tomorrow!

Schoolhouse Review Crew: Christianity Cove

 photo christianitycovelogo_zpsb3aa66f4.jpg

Christianity Cove offers more than 700 free Sunday School lessons and 26 best selling resources to revitalize Children's Ministry programs.  As a member of the Schoolhouse Review Crew, I had the opportunity to use and review two of their resources: Bible Science Experiments and 100 Simple Service Projects.

Bible Science: 25 Fun and Easy Science Experiments That Show the Nature of God is a 55 page e-book that was written to use with children of all ages.  Each of the experiments contain a Scripture Verse, an Understanding God section, a List of Materials, set of Steps to follow, an Answer section to questions the experiment may raise and an Explanation of why the answer is correct.  Each experiments uses easy to find items that you probably already have in your house or can be found at a local store.  The experiments only take a few minutes to set up and complete and are very easy to clean up and put away.

There are 5 experiments in each of the five categories:

Using Light
Water, Light, and Optical Illusions
Making Water Stand Up
Using Water As a Magnifier
Understanding Shadows
Defining Light and Dark Through Shadow People

Using Color
Using a Color Wheel
Understanding How Rainbows are Made
Separating Colors
Using Bubbles to See Colors
Using Dye to Dilute Color

Using Motion
Demonstrating and Breaking Inertia
Harnessing the Power of Air to Move Things
Spinning Buttons to Understand the Importance of Good Behavior
Using the Wind's Motion to Understand God's Will
Coins in Motion Show God's Protection

Using Magnetism
Seeing How One Magnet Creates Another Magnet
A Maze-ing Magnets
Can a Magnet Rescue a Drowning Paperclip
Creating an Electromagnet
Showing How Opposites Attract in Magnets

Experiments Using Gravity
Gravity Doesn't Care About Weight
Finding the Center of Gravity to Create Balance
Changing the Center of Gravity Keeps the Disciple Standing
How Heat Affects Gravity
Putting a Spin on Gravity

You can purchase Bible Science for $25 by clicking here.

I downloaded the e-book to my computer and then emailed it to my iPad to for easier reading.  I used Bible Science in my home with my children.  We tried several of the experiments listed in the book over the last several weeks, reading and discussing the Scripture verse, explanations, and Understanding God sections. The experiments did not take long  to set up, complete, discuss, and put away.

Making Water Stand Up

Using Bubbles to See Colors

I really liked the idea of a book directed at using Science to point children to God. Each experiment is based on a Scripture Verse that is in the lesson.  I found the directions very easy to follow and appreciate that most of the supplies I already had at home and didn't have to go searching for.  I like that what is supposed to happen is included for those of us (like me) who are not always successful at having experiments turn out the way they are supposed to, and also an explanation of why it turned out the way it did.

I think pinning down an age range is hard for this book.  It is supposed to be for a wide range of ages allowing older students to do more "hands on" activities and digging deeper into the discussion.  But, many of the experiments are very simplistic and not very interesting to older children.  At the same time, many of the Understanding God sections are a little complex for younger children.  I would aim at using these with children in the Pre-K-2nd grade range and adjusting the Understanding God section as necessary.

100 Simple Service Projects  a 56 page ebook was written to help those in Children's Ministry with teaching children ages pre-K-6th grade turn their hearts toward giving.  The guide has been divided into 5 sections:

1. Service to the Family
2. Service to Those in the Neighborhood
3. Service to the Community
4. Service to Large Charities in America and Overseas
5. Service of a Child's Own Design

Service to the Family focuses on using a "coupon program" for children to complete a chore, help mom or dad with a chore, help a sibling, or help grandma/grandpa day.  It includes a page of sample coupons that you can print and you or your child can fill in.  Service to Those in the Neighborhood gives suggestions for outdoor chores that a child and parent can do together for people in their neighborhood and also discusses and ideas for a Neighborhood Day.  Service to the Community lists suggestions in 6 sub categories:  Serving the Elderly, Services For Children, Services For Animals, Services For the Environment, Services For Wildlife, and Services to Community Shelters with 3-10 suggestions for each.  Service to Large Charities in America and Overseas lists 18 of the best known, well rated, trusted, and child friendly charities with links to their websites to help you figure out where to start.  They also include links to charity navigators if none of their suggestions are what you were looking for.  Service of a Child's Own Design lists 6 different charities that were started by children to encourage those wishing to start their own charities.

You can purchase for $19.95 by clicking here.

I chose 100 Simple Service Projects because between being a mom, being in Children's Ministry in Church, and being a 4 H Leader, I am always looking for ideas for Community Service Projects.  I think it is very important to get children involved in service projects and that they can begin at a very young age.  I downloaded the ebook and read it on my iPad.  The book was easy to read through.  I liked her idea of having the children complete on of each type of service during the school year.  I think that would give the children a little bit of variety in their service projects.  I think the book is laid out and divided nicely so you can find what you are looking for, or just read all the way through and get ideas for the future.

It is my opinion that this book would benefit those who are brand new to doing service projects with kids the most.  I have done many projects with kids over the years, and I didn't really learn anything I didn't already know or get any new ideas, but it would've been a great resource for me when I was first starting out.

Vacation to Lake Catherine 2013

Last week we took a "staycation" to Lake Catherine State Park.  Lake Catherine is one of our favorite Arkansas Sate Parks and we have both camped and stayed in the cabins there before.  The cabins are very reasonably priced (less than $90 per night) and include everything you need except food, clothes, and toiletries. We have to rent 2 cabins because only 6 people can fit in one cabin.  The children think it is fun though to have one cabin for the boys and one for the girls.  All of the cabins also have outside tables, a grill, and a porch swing.  We also had our own dock to fish off of.  Art's brother, his wife, and Art's dad came along for a couple of days too and had a camp site.

I kept the meals very simple while we were at the cabin.  We stopped at Walmart in Hot Springs and I bought everything we needed.  I got burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and steak for supper along with macaroni salad, potato salad, cole slaw, and mac and cheese.  I also got some small potatoes to grill with the steaks.  For lunch we got sandwiches, chips, and fruit.  For breakfast we got donuts, and cereal.  I had popsicles, whales, and supplies for smores for snacks

The children had a great time fishing.  They did not catch as many fish as they did a few weeks ago, but they caught a few.  I think Emelia caught the most!

We cooked Grandpa's big fish

Art caught this fish right after a huge trout broke his fishing line.  Alex wanted to be ready with the net just in case.

They also had fun swimming at the beach.  There is a really nice swim beach at Lake Catherine.  But, the water is always cold!  That doesn't bother the children at all though!

There is a Nature Cabin next to the beach where they do different programs or you can just go in and see the fish, snakes, turtles, and skulls and furs.  The children love going in there!

Art brought his fishing boat.  He did get a chance to take some of the children for a ride and some time to fish in it, but it started having some technical difficulties.

Luckily this nice boat towed them back
And of course we had to cook some "delicious hot smoes" while we were camping!

We had thought it would be fun to rent a big party boat for half a day while our company was there.  But, the day we planned on going, big storms were rolling in.  We didn't want to be in the middle of the lake while it was storming, so we decided to wait a day.  That night there were some pretty strong storms ( I was very thankful to not be in a tent!) and we got a lot of rain.  The next morning they had to open the spillway to prevent flooding and were not aloud to rent any boats.  Oh well, maybe next time!

Since we couldn't rent a boat, we took the children to Mid America Science Museum instead.  They have some new exhibits, including dinosaurs!  My camera flash is not working so my pictures did not turn out great, but the dinosaur exhibit was pretty cool.  The children had a great time!  Lily was sad that we didn't get to do everything, but since we have passes I told her I will take them back again over the summer.

The day we came home, there was a huge front of rain coming through.  It took us over double the usual time the drive takes to get home.  Roads were flooded and there were several accidents.  I was so glad to finally get home!  We had a great time on our vacation, but there's no place like home!
