TOS Review: Write With WORLD

The publishers of God's World News and World Magazine have created a brand new, two year, middle school writing program, Write With WORLD.  The curriculum was designed both because of a desire to correct poor writing skills that are common among students entering college and a need to teach the ability to effectively and efficiently communicate the Truth and discern it from all the different media that surrounds us.    We have had the pleasure of using and reviewing the student/teacher books for the first year of the Write With WORLD program.

Introduction to Teacher's Edition is here.

Here is the Table of Contents.

Write With WORLD covers:
  •  concepts of comparative and critical reading
  • writing fundamentals
  • narratives
  • reporting
  • reviewing
  • critique and opinion
Write with WORLD exposes students to:
  • reading and critical thinking that develop discernment
  • contemporary subjects and professional guidance to pique interest
  • flexible exercises to build confidence and skill for using today's new media
  • a thoughtful and meaningful Christian worldview

The Write With WORLD program comes with a non consumable student book with 16 different levels in 4 separate units.  You also receive a teacher book that contains the entire student book plus guidance and teacher helps.  The teacher book also explains the objectives and  evaluation of each assignment.  Also, coming in September 2012, you will have access to a website containing updated examples, writing prompts, published student works, and a teacher forum.  Students will need their own journal or notebook to compose their work and also will need to have a Dictionary and Thesaurus.

The price of Write With WORLD is $95 for one year or $165 when both first and second year books are purchased together.  Books will be ready to be shipped this summer.  Click here to order.

I have been using Write With WORLD with my 10 year old fourth grade son.  He is a bit younger than the suggested age range of 6th to 9th grade, but I thought he would be the best fit in my house for reviewing this program.  It appealed to him in many ways.  My son is very practical and assignments using real life example are great for him.  He also likes to work independently without having mom hovering over his shoulder or waiting for me to instruct him step by step.  He could complete the assignment on his own and then we could talk about it together.

Some people like to have a separate grammar curriculum, but I love that they combine the grammar and the writing and the practicality which it is taught.  Learning grammar is necessary, but it doesn't have to be full of worksheets and boring lessons.  Write With WORLD teaches grammar in the context of the student's own writing.

The books are very nicely laid out and the assignments are interesting.  It is also flexible and you don't have to complete every assignment if there is one that doesn't appeal to your student.  You do not have to be an expert at grammar or writing in order to teach your student.  Everything the teacher needs is contained in the teacher book.

Since Nick is younger than the recommended age range for the program, his answers and observations were not as in depth as an older student's may be.  I think that in a couple of years Write With WORLD will be the perfect writing program for him.

Disclaimer: As a member of the TOS Crew, I received a complimentary copy of the year one student and teacher books of Write With WORLD for the purpose of writing a fair and honest review.  I received no other compensation.
